Overview
GLP-1 is an innovative medication primarily used to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, but also has significant weight loss benefits. It functions as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, a class of drugs that mimics the natural hormone incretin to stimulate insulin release. After we teach you how to use the medication, you can either self administer the medications weekly at home, or have a nurse administer it weekly in our office. We will follow you in the office at least monthly to ensure you are meeting your goals.
What Is GLP-1 Prescribed For?
There are different brands of GLP-1, such as Wegovy®, Ozempic® and Rybelsus®, which are FDA-approved for various conditions. While its main indication is for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, GLP-1 has been identified as a potential aid for weight loss in qualifying individuals. It works by reducing hunger, slowing gastric emptying and promoting a feeling of fullness after meals, which can lead to a decrease in overall caloric intake.
Clinical trials have highlighted its effectiveness in weight management when combined with diet and exercise. However, it should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional, and the benefits and risks should be carefully evaluated on an individual basis.
GLP-1 is administered once a week by injection, which makes it more convenient than other weight loss medications that need to be taken several times a day.
