What is a cyst?
A cyst is a fluid-filled or semi-solid lump under the skin or within tissues. Most are benign (non-cancerous) but can become painful, infected, or cosmetically bothersome.
Why is cyst removal recommended?
Cyst removal may be needed if:
The cyst is painful, swollen, or infected
It is growing or causing discomfort
There is a risk of rupture or recurrence
You want it removed for cosmetic reasons
What to expect during the procedure
Location: In-office procedure under local anesthesia
Duration: About 20-45 minutes
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cleaning & Anesthesia - The area is sterilized, and numbing medication is applied
- Incision & Removal - A small incision is made, and the cyst (including it's sac) is carefully removed
- Closure & Dressing - Stitches may be placed, and the wound is covered with a bandage
Aftercare instructions/wound care
Keep the area clean and dry
Change the bandage as instructed
Wash hands before touching the wound
Activity restrictions
Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities for a few days
Showering: Follow your provider's instruction on when to resume
Follow-up appointment
Stitch removal: If non-dissolvable stitches were used, they need removal in 7-14 days
Call you provider if you have concerns about healing or recurrence
