Skin Examinations
What is a complete skin exam?
A complete skin exam is a thorough evaluation of your skin from head to toe by a healthcare provider. This exam helps detect abnormal moles, suspicious spots, and early signs of skin cancer. It is especially important for individuals at higher risk due to factors such as:
Fair skin, freckles, or light-colored eyes
Frequent sun exposure or history of sunburns
Personal or family history of skin cancer
A large number of moles or atypical (irregular) moles
What to expect during the exam
You may be asked to change into a medical gown for a full examination
Your provider will examine your scalp, face, neck, chest, back, arms, legs, hands, feet, nails, and less visible areas (such as the palms, soles, and between fingers and toes)
A dermatoscope (a special magnifying tool) may be used to examine suspicious moles or lesions
If a concerning spot is found, a biopsy (removal of a small sample for testing) may be recommended
A skin cancer screening is a focused exam to detect early signs of skin cancer including:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) - The most common type; often appears as a pearly or waxy bump
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) - May present as a scaly, red patch or a sore that doesn't heal
Melanoma - A dangerous cancer that can develop from moles or appear as new, dark, irregular spots
How often should you have a skin exam?
Annual skin exams are recommended for most adults
More frequent exams may be needed if you have a history of skin cancer or other risk factors
If you notice any new, changing, or concerning spots, schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Early Detection Saves Lives!
